If you’re into the muscle car scene, we’re almost certain you’ve taken your fair share of drives. The importance of how well your seating position is becomes critical when cruising, taking trips to the store, during spirited driving or even trying your hand at some competitive road racing at autocross events. In either case, seating position not only allows for staying comfortable on those long hauls but for staying focused on the road and keeping us in place during those corner-carving antics. Above all, it’s all about remaining safe while driving.
Our second-hand Chevelle had its fair share of aftermarket parts, including these clapped out race-style seats. The seats were broken and uncomfortable and it was obviously time for a new set of Procar seats to hold us comfortably during spirited driving. In our case, the previously installed seats in our ’64 Chevelle were thoroughly abused, broken and beat to shreds, literally. Aside from wedging a 2×4-inch block behind the seat to help support the seatback from a broken recliner, obtaining the correct driving position was nearly impossible and made any driving of the Chevelle quite difficult and annoying. With the availability of aftermarket seat kits, we decided it was time to do ourselves a favor and upgrade to a more refined approach.
With so much seat time, upgrading the factory bench or buckets, or in our case, the seriously clapped out second-hand aftermarket seats seemed like a wise choice. Potentially seeing a ton of road time, choosing the correct seat for our application was key. It had already been under the knife and with a pro-touring style suspension, large brakes and a hefty set of rubber on all four corners, remaining planted in the driver’s seat during competition or even just around the block was something we just couldn’t guarantee with the old seats. Moving to the right side of the seat, we followed the same steps as before and secured the slider to the seat using the supplied hardware with a 12mm socket. What’s more, everything you need to complete your seat swap, including the reclining lever and new hardware is available. And with more than available from Scat, finding the right seat package for your muscle car shouldn’t be an issue.
For us, the addition of the Procar Scat Rally Style 1000 seats (PN# 80-1000-51L, 80-1000-51-R) fit the bill perfectly; providing the interior with a tasteful style and modern approach. Procar Scat Rally Style 1000 seats feature fortified side bolsters and high-density molded foam cushions, which provide a supported ride and help you get more comfortable in your vehicle.
Assembly // Getting It All Together While installing the actual seat in the Chevelle is pretty straightforward; only involving aligning the holes up and bolting it down, we decided to tackle the job of assembling the seats instead to illustrate just how simple it is. This included setting up the included bracket to the bottom of each seat, adding the slider spring and reclining lever along with the inner recliner spring. With both sliders securely attached, we could install the return spring for the slider lever.
This allows the seats locking mechanism to activate once the seat is slid to its desired location. A quick check of the locking mechanism under the seat assured us it was functioning properly. Once the lever is activated, the teeth release and allow the seat to slide forward or back; providing infinite adjustment to obtain the correct driving position. Additionally, using the supplied recliner lever cover w e tightened that down with a Phillips head screwdriver.
Luckily for us, our second-hand Chevelle needed only minor adjustments to the interior to get it to stand out. Thankfully, this meant keeping the somewhat fresh carpeting and perfectly intact headliner. Our new Procar Scat seat additions will fit nicely with the pro-touring style theme we had in mind, although these seats would freshen up just about any build. Although we don’t have any initial seat time in our new threads, we assure you the Chevelle will be thoroughly tested on the street and on the track and we’re holding the owner of this Chevelle to it. We’ve already had lots of mentions and among other editors and office folk walking past the car; they’ve all been positive.

Next, we could go ahead and install the brackets to the sliders on the seat. Using the supplied hardware, we threaded in each bolt only hand tight until they were all started. Then, we tightened down each bolt with a 12mm socket for final.
Now, we were ready to mount the seats into the Chevelle. Trigger Happy // Get Some Seat Time We can’t wait to get some serious miles on the car and hope to get the Chevelle out of the garage soon so we can beat up on its new LS powerplant and Gearstar overdrive transmission. Though installation time will vary, it only required a morning’s worth of work. We were ready to install the new seats before lunch.
All said and done, we were rewarded with a factory-fresh, aggressive-style appearing interior and even had a slight hint of new-car smell. Trust us, the hard work is well worth the effort; just remember, no eating in the Chevelle.
Aside from the seat bracket, each seat from Procar's Scat line, like our Rally Style 1000 seats comes nearly complete. Seats come covered in new vinyl and use all new material to assure a long life. However, Procar offers seats available in your choice of vinyl or even velour if you deem necessary.
